After a few days to clear the wool out of my ears, and eyes I had some time to rethink this piece.
I had really liked the mottled paper leaves on the surface but on a whim I doubled them in size.
Now we're getting closer to what I want.
As for the construction..I need to play with fusing organza to cotton rather than relying on a satin stitch for the edges. this way I might get those sharp points in the maple leaves.

Oh yeah - this is looking great!! I've never thought of fusing organza and cotton - another thing I will have to experiment with.
