Terminator Peak, Purcell Mountains,Golden B.C.

 

This is the winter view from the living room at LeBeausoleil B&B in Golden BC. Not too shabby.
( Ski season opens Dec 12.)
Back in 2011, my sister commissioned me to make a pair of fire place screens, one of which was this view.
I paper-pieced it and at 4 ft. by 3 ft., it was quite an undertaking for me. Now I think I would do it differently.

 

It still stands the test of time, but I have been thinking of redoing it. So as a quick study I decided to do a  tiny, portion, Terminator Peak. This is the mountain peak, left of center.

 

My skills have changed and, there is my favourite subject once more, Trees! Oh, and snow of course.
So first comes a cartoon and as I will be sending these west, I'm doing multiples, 4. These will not be big, only about 10" by 12".

Always a little poetic licence enters here, but the bones are assembled and ready for stitching. The photo is very gray. This is due in part to the distance, snow cover and the every present blowing that puts a fine mist of snow in the picture.

I'm very stubborn, right now about using only materials from my stash. Maybe someone will give me a BIG gift certificate for Christmas. But these work well.

So to finish off for today, I made one pass with Pearl Seta colour. Using a vertical brush I dabbed a thin solution onto the lighter areas of the mottled green. This will stand for snow between the trees. I decided to apply it first as the entire green area will probably be over stitched with tree trunks.
A  few passes at the mountain edge stand for blowing snow. Its very easy to over work this material so light coatings dried and heat set will be my approach.

It's All Fun

My son, the climber, asked if I could make him a chalk bag, (dries the sweat while climbing and hangs from their belt.) He has one, but he has large hands and finds the commercial ones restricting and inconvenient, particularly at the wrong time, 500 ft in the air. I have trouble looking at his photos.

I asked what colour, and he said a "Star Trek" one would be the coolest one at the gym.........

I have to explain that he was weaned on Comic con Conventions. He attended the first one in Toronto at my side. What? Is it so surprising that a high school Chemistry teacher, would LOVE the science in the series. ( I also watched the original at lunch time when we were home from elementary school.) (Shatner for Prime Minister) LOL

Some quick internet search and I found a "how to". So after a trip to a second hand clothing store, I returned with a pair of black pants and a red fleece top.

I spent a couple of hours on the badge. It was really the only nod to the series. Not authentic I know, but it will do.

I chose this particular pair of pants because when they were deconstructed I had a full size discrete zippered pocket to work with. The waist band was cannibalized as well. The red fleece became the liner and with an internal drawstring, the bag is complete.

It IS for Christmas, but I'll let him know its ready,...............in case he wants to go to the gym.

 

Pine Tree - Day 6 - structure complete

I will leave this for a few days now that the structure is complete.
This needs highlights and shadow. So while I'm working on a couple of Christmas presents, this will hang on my wall and I can decide how to finish it.

Pine Tree - Day 5

I've introduced one more shade of green. As did the others, its starts first as the bobbin thread. It will eventually become the final top thread and be the brightest green.

As the layers build up I'm trying to leave as much unattached as possible. Sometimes it becomes stitched by the next layer but there are places where it remains loose.

Pine Tree - Day 4

I had hoped to accomplish a little more today but I was called away. But I did manage to spend a couple of hours on my tree.

Moving up the bole of the tree the branches are still open and thin. The placement now is deliberately over the darkest threads to move them into the background. I was happy with how the third colour looked on yesterday's effort, but I will finish all the second green branches before I tackle the lightest green. It will be the predominant colour at the top.

Today I stitched and attached 8 branches. I still have to decide how high I will go.
